Dr. Marcel Salathé is Assistant Professor of Biology in the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics (CIDD) at The Pennsylvania State University. Born in Switzerland, he studied biology at the University in Basel. His dissertation, written at the ETH in Zurich, examined the evolution of complexity at the level of genes, individuals, and populations, focusing on three complex biological systems: Host-parasite interactions, gene and protein interaction networks, and sexual reproduction. His work resulted in numerous scientific publications, and was awarded the ETH medal. Prior to joining Penn State, Marcel Salathé was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University from 2008 to 2010.
Marcel Salathé started a web company in the late ’90s and later worked a few years in industry as a software developer. While the experience was invaluable, it made him realize that his first love is science.
Marcel Salathé also loves music and the visual arts. He used to play keyboard in a band. He’s fascinated by conceptual art and is the author or co-author of the following projects :
